Tzotzil name: Potzem Nichim - Scientific name: Tagetes erecta L.

Bush of up to 1.5 meter high, with compound leaves made up of 11 to 17 leaflets, rose-shaped flower, yellowish orange in color, sweet-smelling when rubbed. Ornamental plant since our ancestor's time. Found in all municipalities of the highlands of Chiapas.

MEDICAL USE: Coughs
PREPARATION: Boil a handful of the herb in a litter of water 
HOW TO ADMINISTER: Drink a glass 3 times a day for 3 days; repeat according to severity of illness.
RESTRICTIONS TO PATIENT: Do not eat chili peppers or cold foods, nor drink cold water.


Tzotzil name: Victal pom Tzu´nun - Scientífic name: Salvia cinnabarina Mart. y Gal.

Bush that reaches up to 1.5 meters in height; long red, bell shaped flowers; its leaves are velvet-like found among oak trees in cold and temperate lands in the Chamula, Zinacantan, Tenejapa e Larrainzar.

MEDICAL USE: Diarrhea, vomiting, fever
PREPARATION: For diarrhea and vomiting, boil a handful in a litter of water. For fever, boil 10 handful in 10 liters of water.
HOW TO ADMINISTER: For diarrhea, give the patient a glass 3 times a day for 3 days. For fever, drink a glass 3 times a day and bathe the patient in the cold infusion.
RESTRICTIONS TO THE PATIENT:Do not a eat cold foods.



Tzotzil name: Joy - Scientífic name: Tigridia pavonia L.F. Ker.

Grass measuring up to 70 cm high;
sleek, thin, single stem; greenish- 
yellow, spear-shaped leaves with
lengthwise folds; flower has 3 red
and yellow petals; lasts one or two days, Grows between corn fields, in grasslands or fields. Found in Chamula, Chenalhó, Huixtán, Zinacantan, Larránzar, San Cristóbal and Mitontic municipalities.

MEDICAL USE: Rashes, abscesses and pimples
PREPARATION: Wash  well and crush raw with a bit of water
HOW TO ADMINISTER: Smear  on the pimple or abscesses 3 times a day for 3 days or until the pimple explodes.
RESTRICTIONS TO THE PATIENT: Do not eat pork or fat



Tzotzil name: Lotom Chi´ich´ - Scientífic name: Mimosa albida H.&B.ex.Willd

Plant that reaches up to 2.5 meters in height; its small leaves close when touched; it has round flowers with pink hair. Grows along roads and in the mountains of all mountains of all municipalities of the Chiapas highlands.
